Word Order with Adverbs

Adverbs

Adverbs are words that describe everything except nouns. Those that describe nouns are called adjectives. But, basically these are ‘describing words’. They answer specific questions like:

• • • HOW MUCH     (Technically called Adverbs of Degree)
    • HOW OFTEN   (Technically called Adverbs of Frequency)
    • WHERE            (Technically called Adverbs of Place)
    • HOW                (Technically called Adverbs of Manner)
    • WHEN              (Technically called Adverbs of Time)

In terms of their position in the sentences, we can divide them into 3 kinds:

1. 1. 1. 1. Before the words they describe — HOW MUCH, and HOW OFTEN
         2. After the words they describe — WHERE
         3. At the end of the sentence — HOW and WHEN
