Questions: WH-

How to form a WH- Question? There are two aspects to this. I’ll call it the basic ‘grammar aspect” and the advanced information aspect.

 

A. Grammar Aspect:

Simply add a WH- question word before the Yes/No question. The different question words include:

WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHICH, WHY, HOW, WHO, WHOM, WHOSE, and so on.

So, for instance:

1 Has the government suggested social distancing? Why has the government suggested social distancing?
2 Is she a natural leader? How is she a natural leader?
3 Is the car safe? Where is the car safe?
4 Are they coming? When are they coming?
5 Do we have some salad left? Where do we have some salad left?

 

B. Information Aspect

This is to form the question based on what you wish to know: what information you seek. So, for instance:

STATEMENT: Ishaan plays the guitar.

If this is the “answer” to a question, the questions could be:

The possible WH- Questions could be

        1. Who plays the guitar?
        2. What does Ishaan play?
        3. What does Ishaan do with the guitar?

So, here we have 3 different forms of questions for the same statement depending on what we wish to know.
