STORY

Mother Hen

There was once a Mother Hen that had eight little chicks. They were very small, and Mother Hen looked after them very well. In the day, she got them food, and at night she kept them under her wings. They were very happy.

One day in the morning, Mother Hen and her chicks went down to a small stream. It was very beautiful. She thought her chicks would love it.

They reached the stream and played on the bank for some time. Then Mother Hen said, “Let’s go to the other side. It’s beautiful there.”

Mother Hen jumped onto a big stone inside the stream. “It’s easy to cross to the other side”, thought Mother Hen.

Then she asked her chicks to come after her. But, her chicks didn’t obey. She didn’t know why. She said again, “Come here. Jump onto this stone with me. Then, we can go to the other side.”

“But Mother! We can’t!” said all the little chicks.

“Yes, darlings, you can. Just jump here with me. See, like this!” Then Mother Hen flapped her wings and jumped up.

One chick, Little Woody, was standing alone and flapping his wings. “Mother, see, I am flapping my wings,” said Woody, “but I can’t jump.”

Mother Hen thought, “My darlings are simply too small to jump across. I must do something else.”
