Delexical Verbs

  • 22 July 2020

Delexical verbs help you sound fluent in English.

How good are you with them?

Delexical verbs are verbs like “do”, “have”, “take”, “make”, “give” and so on. They don’t have any “power” on their own they take the meaning from the object. For instance, when we speak about consuming food, we say,
“I have breakfast.”
And not
“I take breakfast.”
Of course, “we do breakfast” is absolutely meaningless!
Here, “have” has its meaning in breakfast. So, when I say,
“I have a pen”,
It means possession. But, “I have breakfast” means consumption.
