We introduce the English structures and vocabulary using the TELW methodology. This enables the learner to retain the language elements and use them more confidently.
The language skills learnt include listening, speaking, and reading. It has been found that the writing skills are automatically enhanced as the speaking skills improve. However, we also have specific writing skills programs, should the learner intend to avail them.
The way we assist the learners to become familiar with the English language elements is to take them through the process of various activities, such as debates, discussions, presentations, hot seats, interrogations, and several role-plays and simulations. For this purpose, we make ourselves aware of the specific situations that the learner faces in their workaday life. This helps us use the relevant activity or activities to make the learner familiarise themselves with the elements. We also take care to get the learner to use the elements in their work situations, in the class, so that they don’t have to take pains to adapt the elements to their work situation separately.
The entire class is conducted only in English. We don’t even encourage translations. We don’t wish our students to become personified Google Translators.
The learners are encouraged to speak as much as possible. We actively discourage silence and notes taking. Also, accuracy is not at a premium – communication is. We correct the accuracy element only when communication is hurt.
During breaks, the learners are actively encouraged to chat with one another in English, using the structures learnt in class over the entire course.
All these and more make learning English at TELW a pleasurable experience. The objective of the class is to get the learner to communicate their ideas and opinions accurately, comfortably, confidently, assertively, and politely.
We do not allow any unparliamentary words, ideas, or opinions that could vitiate the atmosphere. We energetically enjoin upon the learners to remain strictly a-political in class/school premises.
